Huachuma Cactus Preservation Garden

In partnership with Miguel Mendiburu, we officially opened the Huachuma Preservation Garden in Taray, Peru during the summer of 2025. This garden will be the home to 5,000 Huachuma of many varieties. Planting and care of the garden is an ongoing project, with the help of many hands and hearts from around the world.

Adopt a Cactus

Support our ongoing efforts at the garden by Adopting a Cactus. Your tax-deductible donation will be used for ongoing care and development of the garden. The costs of maintaining this garden are ongoing, as well as the costs of acquiring ethically sourced plants for propagation. By adopting a cactus, your support will enable the continued operations and development of this vital preservation effort.

Donors who make a sustaining commitment will have a cactus planted in their name, with prayers from Miguel. Everyone is welcome to schedule a time to visit the garden if traveling in Peru.

Why This Matters

The Huachuma cactus faces significant challenges due to habitat loss and over-harvesting.  Worldwide demand for this cactus have severely endangered the wild stocks, leaving indigenous communities without access to their ancestral medicine. This garden will provide a sustainable source of cactus for the future, as well as a gathering place for community and events.

Anyone who would like to help out in person at the sanctuary, we warmly invite you to get in touch with us to arrange your visit. The sanctuary is located in the village of Taray in the Sacred Valley.

For those who wish to support our mission in additional ways, we offer a special “Plant More Worry Less” t-shirt. This shirt features a beautiful graphic design and showcases the mantra of our project. All proceeds from t-shirt sales directly support the Huachuma Foundation’s efforts.

Events and Community Engagement

As part of our commitment to education and cultural preservation, we plan to host a variety of events and workshops at the sanctuary. These will include traditional gatherings, educational programs, and partnership initiatives with like-minded organizations. We warmly welcome all our donors to participate in these activities, fostering a deeper connection with the Huachuma tradition and our growing community. Whether you’re interested in hands-on learning, spiritual exploration, or simply wish to witness the sanctuary’s growth, your involvement is welcomed. Stay connected with us to learn about upcoming events and opportunities to engage with this work.
